Marine Anchor Chain -- FAQ Guide - Product Categories

1. What is Anchor Chain?

The anchor chain refers to the component that attaches the anchor to the boat or structure.

The purpose of anchor chain is to secure the anchor to a part of the vessel in such a manner that it can be easily hauled up when the need arises.

It also plays a major role in absorbing a certain portion of forces away from the main structure and anchor head. For instance, during storms or other similar weather conditions, the vessel or offshore rig tends to pitch and heel. This motion can intensify, causing damage to the vessel.

To dampen these forces, the anchor chain is designed to absorb a certain amount of the load. Since anchor chains are built to withstand large forces on them, they are not drastically damaged or deformed by such loads.

The anchor chain is a vital component in mooring a ship to the bottom. Along with the anchor, the chain’s weight holds the vessel in place.

2. What’s the function of the anchor chain?

1. Connecting anchor to hull

Physical connection: Anchor chain is the physical connection between the anchor (deployed on the seabed) and the hull. When the ship needs to anchor, the anchor is lowered from the ship using a winch or other lifting equipment. The anchor chain is then deployed from the ship's chain locker and sinks into the water with the anchor.

2. Transferring the grip of the anchor

Force transfer mechanism: When the anchor is driven into the seabed, grip is generated. This force is not static; it needs to be transferred to the hull to keep the ship stationary. The anchor chain acts as a medium for this force transfer.

3. The role of anchor chain

Enhanced grip: The part of the anchor chain that lies on the seabed is called the anchor chain, which significantly improves the overall mooring capacity. When dropping anchor, the part of the anchor that initially penetrates the seabed may not be enough to hold the ship in all circumstances. The anchor chain enhances grip due to the weight of the anchor chain and its contact with the seabed.

In summary, anchor chains play a multifaceted and indispensable role in offshore operations. It connects the anchor and the hull, transmits the anchor's grip, and enhances the mooring force through the anchor chain, ensuring the safety and stability of the anchored ship, making it the cornerstone of the offshore mooring system.
