5 Questions to Confirm Before Ordering Marine Delta Plate

A Marine Delta Plate (also called Triangle Plate) is a critical connecting component in towing and mooring systems, linking the main towline to the bridle chains. If the specifications aren't confirmed before ordering, you might end up with parts that don't fit or lack the required strength — and the rework cost can far exceed the price of the plate itself. 

Before placing your order, confirm these 5 questions. 

1. What is the Safe Working Load (SWL)?

SWL is the primary specification for selecting a delta plate. Ask your customer directly: What SWL do you need? 

According to industry standards, the Minimum Breaking Load (MBL) should be no less than 1.5 times the SWL. Standard delta plates typically range from 17 tons to 150 tons SWL. The 17-50 ton range is commonly used for small to medium towing vessels, harbor towing, and ship shifting. The 55-150 ton range is for ocean towage, large vessel mooring, and FPSO applications. 

50 tons is the dividing line between welded and forged delta plates. Below 50 tons, welded construction is mature and reliable. Above 50 tons, forging is recommended. 

Some shipowners require the MBL to reach 5 times the SWL, but this is not a universal requirement. Ask your customer upfront: "Do you have any specific breaking load requirements?" — this simple question will define the selection boundary and save significant rework later.

2. What are the classification society requirements? 

Ask the customer two questions: "Does this delta plate require a classification society certificate, such as DNV, ABS, LR, or CCS?" 

If the answer is "yes", forged construction is basically the only option. Not because welding is weaker, but because classification societies have a more established product approval framework for forged components. Welded plates can meet mechanical requirements, but they require a full process of procedure qualification, welder certification, and NDT — significantly increasing both approval timeline and documentation workload. 

3. Where and how will the delta plate be installed? 

The answer to this question determines the material grade and surface treatment. 

If the delta plate is installed above deck, exposed to seawater, Q345D with hot-dip galvanized finish is the standard configuration. If installed underwater for extended periods, the galvanizing thickness should be confirmed, and additional corrosion protection may be needed. If the vessel operates in high-latitude waters (where temperatures may drop below 0°C), the material must meet -20°C impact toughness requirements — Q345D is the minimum, Q355B is not suitable. For indoor or short-term use at ambient temperatures, Q355B with paint or rust preventive oil is sufficient. 

Just ask: "Which sea areas will the vessel operate in, and where will the delta plate be installed?" — that is usually enough to determine the right material direction.  

4. What are the dimensional and fit requirements? 

The dimensions of a delta plate must match the shackles and chains it will connect. 

Key dimensions to confirm with your customer: Is the plate equilateral or isosceles? What are the three hole center distances? What is the hole diameter? What is the plate thickness? All these parameters must align with the mating shackles. 

5. What are the quantity and delivery requirements? 

Finally, confirm two production questions: quantity and delivery timeline. 

Welded delta plates typically have a shorter lead time than forged plates — welding is a straightforward fabrication process, while forged parts require billet preparation, heat treatment, and machining — more steps, longer cycle.
